After previously going up on the Lord's Honours Boards for both batting and bowling accolades against Pakistan, Ian Botham sealed his spot on the Honours Boards once again in the same calendar year owing to his bowling figures of 11-140 versus New Zealand.

After winning the toss and batting first the Kiwis ended up on 339 in the first innings. It was a telling performance from Botham, bowling a mammoth spell of 38 overs to pick up figures of 6-101. David Gower (71) and Clive Radley (77) helped England get to 289 in their first innings. Their efforts however, were not enough to help the hosts get a lead.

What followed in the third innings of the Test Match was some stellar bowling performance from England. Bob Willis and Botham taking the new ball for England on Day Three reduced the Kiwis to 37-7 at the end of day’s play. After a rest day on Day Four they would go on to bowl out the visitors for a mere 67. Willis ended up with figures of 4-16 of his 16 overs and Botham with 5-39 of his 18.1 overs making it 11-140 for the Test Match.

Gower (46) and Graham Gooch (42)* helped England chase down the target of 118 and win by 7 wickets on Day Four.
