After winning an ODI series in India prior to this final, this encounter was very much anticipated to be an interesting one and it definitely lived up to it.
England won the toss and elected to bat. After losing Nick Knight for 14, Marcus Trescothick and Hussain got together and put up a partnership of 182 runs. Trescothick would go on to score 109 of 100 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes, Hussain on the other hand ended up as England’s highest scorer with 115 runs of 128 balls which included 10 fours enabling England to a highly competitive total of 325/5 in 50 overs.
Despite the batting efforts from Hussain and Trescothick, some sensational batting from a then young Yuvraj Singh and Mohammed Kaif propelled India to a victory chasing the total in the final over. Kaif remained unbeaten on 87 of 75 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes and was announced as Man of the Match.
