A fine century from Jonty Rhodes had inspired South Africa to a total of 360 before Allan Donald, using all his experience of English conditions, took five wickets to help bowl England out for only 110, Hussain top-scoring with only 15.
With a hefty deficit, England followed-on and fared better second time around, Hussain putting on 94 with Michael Atherton for the second wicket and 116 with Alec Stewart for the fourth. Hussain hit seventeen fours in his six and a half hour vigil, but once he and Stewart fell there was little resistance, and England were dismissed for 264 and South Africa duly sealed victory by ten wickets.
Hussain and his teammates turned the series around though, winning at Trent Bridge and Headingley to take the series 2-1.
