The England captain secured his 13th Test hundred thanks to three consecutive sixes having begun his innings in relatively steady fashion. However, following the dismissal of Jonny Bairstow, the England captain wasted no time in putting his foot down.
Infront of a sold-out crowd, Stokes began the day on 29* with England chasing 371 and needing another 257 runs to win with six wickets remaining. However, by the time he departed the score had moved on to 301-7 with England needing just 70 runs to win.
Facing a fearsome Australian pace attack, Stokes took on the short-pitched bowling of Cameron Green just before lunch. First came a four swiftly followed by three consecutive sixes, the second of which was very nearly caught on the boundary by Mitchell Starc.
The manner in which Stokes reached his century very much summarised the aggressive approach of his England side, and provided a glimpse of Ben Stokes at his very best.
