With England winning the toss and electing to field, Tharanga opened the batting for his side, which boasted a top-order line-up with Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan all involved for the visitors.
However, none of those batsmen could score above 24 with Tharanga still at the crease with Sri Lanka 187-4.
By the time Tharanga’s innings came to an end, he had hit 120 off 156 balls, with 14 fours scored in the process before being caught by Jamie Dalrymple off the bowling of Sajid Mahmood.
Sri Lanka finished with a total of 257/9 which they successfully defended, winning the ODI by 20 runs with Tharanga deservedly being awarded as the man-of-the-match.
