All five wickets came in the first session of their inaugural Test Match against England at Lord’s.
After England’s ICC Men’s World Cup Final win, their pre-Ashes clash Ireland was supposed to be a tune-up for the series with Australia, but Murtagh reminded the hosts that Ireland were not only making up the numbers in only their third ever Test.
His experience of bowling countless overs from the Nursery End for Middlesex proved fruitful for the visitors as Murtagh picked up the wickets of both openers Rory Burns and, on debut, Jason Roy, before dismissing a trio of English batsmen who failed to trouble the scorers between them; Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes.
Murtagh finished the innings with incredible figures of 5 for 13 as Ireland bowled England out for only 85 before lunch.
