After the Kiwi skipper John Wright won the toss and elected to field, they bowled England out for 334 owing to a collective effort from their bowlers. Opening the batting Franklin and Wright ended Day Three on 156-0 with Franklin and Wright remaining unbeaten on 60 and 84 respectively.
After a rest day, On Day Four the pair would go on to have a partnership of 185 runs before Wright got out on 98. Franklin would go on to score 101, an innings which consisted of eight fours. Richard Hadlee scoring 86 down the order the Kiwis were able to get to a total of 462.
The Test match was drawn on Day Five with England ending up on 272-4 with Allan Lamb remaining not out on 84 to help the hosts save the Test Match.
