After winning the toss and electing to bat, England managed to get to 286. Australia in reply scored a mammoth 528. Coming in at number 6, Waugh remained unbeaten on 152 of 249 balls with 17 fours. Thanks to a well made 94 by David Boon and 74 by Geoff Lawson, Waugh got the much needed support to boost the total for Australia.
England made a commendable fightback in the 3rd innings on the back of a 106 of 198 balls from their skipper David Gower to end up on 359. However, it was not enough and Australia managed to chase down a target of 118 with Boon and Waugh remaining not out on 58 and 21 respectively.
