During South Africa’s first innings, Barnes broke both ways and kept a perfect length, taking the first two wickets in the first four overs, and Barnes and Frank Foster took five wickets each to bowl South Africa out for 58.
On the third day, when South Africa resumed on 114-4 having being made to follow on, Barnes managed to get a lot of work on the ball and bowled wonderfully well, taking the last three wickets of the match to finish with match figures of 11-110.
Barnes was regarded by many, especially his contemporary players and observers, as the greatest of all bowlers and he was the first bowler to take 150 Test wickets which he achieved in his 24th match for England.
