In this rain affected game, Australian skipper Mark Taylor won the toss and elected to field. Thanks to a masterclass bowling effort from the legendary Glenn McGrath, who bowled 20.3 overs to end his spell with figures of 8-34, England were bowled out for just 77.
What followed was some high-quality batting from Elliott scoring 112 of 180 balls with 20 fours. After losing his opening partner and captain Taylor early in the innings to Darren Gough, Elliot stitched up important partnerships with Greg Blewett and Mark Waugh to help Australia reach 213-7 before declaring.
The game ended in a draw with England saving the game in their second innings with 266-4 on board.
