In the final of the Emirates Triangular Tournament, England had won the Toss and elected to bat first.
That decision proved to be troublesome, with Muralitharan leading the way with the ball with a superb five-wicket haul in which he conceded just 35 runs off his ten overs.
Nick Knight, Michael Atherton, Alec Stewart, Ali Brown and Nasser Hussain were the victims to Muralitharan’s dominant spell of bowling to condemn England to a reasonable total of 256/8.
However, in response, Sri Lanka were just as impressive with the bat as they were with the ball. A marvellous unbeaten century by Marvan Atapattu guided the visitors to a score of 260/5 off 47.1 overs to seal victory in the match and the series.
Muralitharan’s efforts with the ball saw him named as the man-of-the-match as well as a spot within Lord's history.
