Australia were in relative trouble at 27 for 2 but Waugh had the nous to revive the innings, particularly with his strength on the on-side, and standing up to a hostile partnership of Darren Gough and Andrew Caddick.
Waugh, along with brother Steve, added 107 for the fourth wicket before Mark eventually departed for 108, Gough hitting the stumps directly from mid-on.
His century inspired Australia to 401 all out and with England reaching 227 all out in their second innings, the Aussies needed only fourteen runs for victory and they won the match by eight wickets.
