Pakistan had posted a total of 242/8 after their 50 overs, leaving England with a challenging quest of securing victory in the 2001 NatWest Series.
England's task got even tougher when they found themselves 26-3 and despite Owais Shah contributing with a fine score of 62, Trescothick found himself isolated at the crease with the hosts now four down.
In what would be one of the most memorable ODI innings from Trescothick, the Somerset opener eventually finished with a score of 137, while no other England batsman other than Shah could achieve a score above 10.
Trescothick's efforts took England to the brink of victory, only to be caught by Shahid Afridi off the bowling of Saqlain Mushtaq as his 142-ball innings came to an end.
Pakistan won the terrific encounter by just two runs but such was the effort and performance by Trescothick he was voted man-of-the-match despite being on the losing side.
