England had put themselves into bat after the toss and were 96-2 with Denis Compton and Bill Edrich at the crease.
The duo shared a partnership of 370 which was a then world record for the third wicket in Test cricket and is still the highest partnership score at this ground.
After Edrich was dismissed for 189, Tuckett took control of the rest of England’s batting line-up with hope of pulling South Africa back into the match.
The fast bowler removed Compton – who scored 208 – before also claiming the wickets of Charlie Barnett, Norman Yardley and finally Sir Alec Bedser to complete a spot on the Honours Boards.
England declared their innings with a score of 554/8 to their name and after South Africa could only manage 327 and 252 (follow-on), the hosts comfortably chased down their target of 26 in their second innings, winning the match by 10 wickets.
