Having won the toss and deciding to bat, England were soon 94-4 with Dev ripping through the hosts’ opening batsmen by taking all four wickets.
A gutsy century from Derek Randall put England back on top with his country managing to secure a total of 433 in their first innings.
Nonetheless, it was a fine effort from Dev, who took 5-125 with Geoff Cook, Allan Lamb, Chris Tavare, David Gower and Randall all losing their wicket to the talented all-rounder.
Dev’s figures saw him bowl a mammoth total of 43 overs, with eight of those overs being maidens.
India were bowled out for 128 in their first innings and could only manage 369 following-on and despite Dev taking three wickets in England’s second innings, he could not prevent the hosts from reaching their comfortable target of 65 runs.
Dev was given the man-of-the match award for his efforts but yet, his finest performance at Lord’s was still to come, when a year later he guided India to Cricket World Cup final glory at the Home of Cricket.
