In a match which Pakistan won the toss and elected to bowl, Ali took full advantage of the seamer friendly conditions at the Home of Cricket, claiming figures of 5 for 51 from 9.2 overs.
He struck almost immediately - dismissing Dawid Malan in the second over of the day, without scoring, and later accounted for England captain Ben Stokes, bowling the stand-in skipper.
Wicket-keeper John Simpson was also bowled before Craig Overton became Ali’s fourth victim, snared caught-behind after the seamer reviewed the initial not out decision.
His fifth wicket came as Pakistan ended the England innings, bowling them out for 247. Saqib Mahmood attempted a big shot and found the hands of Haris Rauf in the deep.
