Aided by a century from Ian Bell, England made 361 all out in their first innings with Swann also contributing a useful 28 from 26 balls from the number eleven spot.
Australia never got to grips with the England attack in reply, particularly the spin of Swann who dismissed both Chris Rogers and Usman Khawaja as they struggled to 69 for 4. In adding the wickets of Steve Smith, Brad Haddin and Ryan Harris, he achieved what he described as a ‘boyhood dream’ to appear on the Honours Board in a Lord’s Test, with figures of 5 for 44.
Joe Root’s 180 helped England declare on 349 for 7 and the Australian target of 583 was always going to be too many, as they were bowled out for 235, England sealing a crushing 347-run win. Swann also took four wickets in the second innings, claiming match figures of 9 for 122.
