Alongside L J Coldwell, who was making clever use of his slower ball, Trueman was bowling at his liveliest on a pitch which helped him, causing the Pakistan team to go into lunch on Day 1 on 76-6, and they were bowled out for 100 45 minutes after lunch, Trueman taking 6 wickets for 31 and Pakistan captain Javed Burki became his 200th Test wicket victim.
On Day 2 Trueman helped Tom Graveney to put on 76 for the ninth wicket, giving the hosts a lead of 270 going into the second innings.
Then Trueman took 3 for 85 in Pakistan’s second innings. England won the match by 9 wickets with two days and half an hour to spare.
Trueman’s first-innings performance was to be his best bowling figures at Lord’s, while his ninth wicket partnership with Tom Graveney was then a record.
