Jayawardene’s partnership with Atapattu was the driving force behind Sri Lanka’s big first innings total, their highest ever total at the Home of Cricket. The pair put on 206 for the third wicket, helping the visitors rack up 555 for 8 declared.
Wisden described Jayawardene as a ‘revelation’ and even when he had to bat with a runner due to being hit by a ball from Andrew Flintoff, he still provided both power and precision in his stroke play.
His 107 came from 168 balls and included seventeen fours and Jayawardene would have hoped that Sri Lanka would go on to force victory, after bowling England out for 275. However, they fought back to make 529 for 5 declared when following on and the match ended in a draw
