Pitch preparations had been severely hampered by heavy rain, and on the very definition of a sticky wicket Australia’s first innings total of 116 proved to be the highest of the match.
England stumbled and stuttered to 53 in reply, scoring at barely a run an over, with Turner picking up 5-27.
It was a similar tale in Australia’s second innings as they limped their way to 60 all out, setting England 124 to win - a modest target in different circumstances, but exactly double the 62 runs that the English batters were able to muster up.
Turner again picked up five, for match figures of 10-63, as Australia won the first test of the series; though defeats at The Oval and Old Trafford ensured they would eventually go on to lose it 2-1.
