With England batting first, New Zealand had a big task on their hands to try put pressure on a team which as statistics show, had often got the better of the kiwi’s. Cairns took the new ball and made the first breakthrough claiming Butcher for just 8 runs.

With England suddenly looking in trouble, Cairns showed no mercy as he took the wickets of Headley and Mullally to restrict the host’s to 186 all out.
New Zealand then went on to get 358 in their first innings and managed to restrict England to 229 in their final innings. New Zealand knocked off the total one down to seal victory against the host’s.
Cairns led from the front with the ball and helped New Zealand to their 5th win in the 80 test matches against England. Cairns cemented his spot on the honours board with impressive figures of 6-77.
