The innings had already almost reached damage limitation proportions for India when Greig reached the crease. Centuries from Dennis Amiss and Mike Denness had helped England to 369 for 4, but Greig showed no mercy on the visitors, hitting 106 from 180 balls.
He and Denness added 202 for the fifth wicket as England really took the innings away from India, who fought hard for their chance to stay in the game. Greig’s stay at the crease lasted just over three hours as he hit eight fours and a six in his solid and robust knock.
When the pair were separated, the final five wickets fell for only 58 runs but India would go on to lose this match heavily, and indeed the three-match series 3-0.
