The opener was not part of the original 13-man squad in the lead up to the match but after Michael Vaughan sustained an injury in the warm-up, Strauss seized his opportunity in one of the finest Test matches ever played at HQ.
Strauss’ innings consisted of 215 balls with 13 fours scored as he became only the fourth player - after Australian Harry Graham (in 1893), England's John Hampshire (1969) and India's Sourav Ganguly (1996) to score a Test century on debut at the Home of Cricket.
