The Proteas’ response, a mammoth 682 for 6 declared was underpinned by captain Graeme Smith’s 259, which overhauled Don Bradman’s 254 as the highest score by an overseas player at Lord’s as the skipper continued his incredible form, fresh from his 277 at Edgbaston in the opening Test of the series.
England went down fighting though despite a deficit of 509. Flintoff’s counter-attacking knock from only 146 balls included eighteen fours and five sixes, and helped his side to 417 all out.
South Africa won the match by an innings and 92 runs and an exciting five-match series ended 2-2.
