The Test was notable for being the final match in the international career of James Anderson, England’s leading wicket-taker, but it was Atkinson who grabbed the first innings headlines as he recorded the best Test innings figures by any English bowler on debut.
The seamer had made his white-ball bow for England in the previous year and was one of two debutants in the side – wicket-keeper Jamie Smith the other.
Captain Ben Stokes won the toss and asked the West Indies to bat first. Atkinson grabbed the first wicket of the innings, removing skipper Kraigg Brathwaite for six.
He duly struck a further six times as he sealed his place on the Honours Board at the first time of asking and in doing so secured himself an Oris watch.
Anderson, in his penultimate bowling stint for England, picked up the final wicket of Jayden Seales much to the pleasure of the Lord’s crowd.
Atkinson followed his first innings success by taking a further five wickets in the second innings.
He removed Kavem Hodge, Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph and finally Jayden Seales to make history at Lord's.
